I have loved teaching poetry in my class. We have been creating a poetry unit on Native Americans of North Carolina which is what we are studying in Social Studies. For language arts we are reading pourquoi tales. I cannot believe how well everything is integrating. The students are absolutely loving this project. Students have been familiarized with haikus, acrostics, concrete poems, I Poems, and Color Poems. I have lots of examples, read my poems, and read the awesome selection of books from the class. They LOVED Technically It’s Not My Fault. The students were able to pick which type of poem they wanted to complete. Then they gathered into groups; I have been monitoring and revising with the different groups. I am going to put their work together to make a Native American poetry book. I told the students that I would copy their poems and everyone could make their own class poetry book.
Wow! That is really neat you have been able to teach your students about so many different forms of poetry. I thought I was doing good and have only taught I Am and acrostic poems. I am glad your students have enjoyed the expierence so much and it has been such a positive experiences. I may have to steal your idea of giving my students a copy of all of the poems we have written!
They catch on pretty fast. We’ve spent a couple weeks working on poetry. They knew a lot about acrostic and I poems. We have done these since the beginning of the year.
That sounds awesome, Candace! It’s great when you’re able to make cool projects work, especially when you can integrate several different subjects and get the kids fired up about it.

it seems like you’ve taken as much from this class as i have! it’s amazing how children get excited about things once they start writing-even if they had a preconceived idea that they would hate it!
