I completely sympathise with what you said here. It took me a long time before I realised that the first, fleeting impression you get from a poem (those images that flash up between commas) is really the only one that matters. It may pull you in, and encourage you to look a little deeper, or it may not.

I liked this post.

it seems like you've taken as much from this class as i have! it's amazing how children get excited about things once they start writing-even if they had a preconceived idea that they would hate it!

I think reading this to students and then allowing them an opportunity to write their own short graphic novel would be a great way for students to have an outlet to show emotion in their writing.

I loved your project on the Biltmore house! I think that place is amazing and I have only been there once. I know so much more about the house and family now. Thanks for sharing all of your research. You could see how much you learned and loved about The Biltmore House through your excitement!!

I enjoyed learning more about the Biltmore House. I grew up near there in Sylva, NC from seventh grade on and have toured the Biltmore House several times. I remember a couple of field trips while in school and of course tours with my family. I enjoy going at Christmas when it is decorated.

That sounds awesome, Candace! It's great when you're able to make cool projects work, especially when you can integrate several different subjects and get the kids fired up about it.

And I'm glad you liked the muffins :) Thanks for your comment...I had fun doing the project!

They catch on pretty fast. We've spent a couple weeks working on poetry. They knew a lot about acrostic and I poems. We have done these since the beginning of the year.

Wow! That is really neat you have been able to teach your students about so many different forms of poetry. I thought I was doing good and have only taught I Am and acrostic poems. I am glad your students have enjoyed the expierence so much and it has been such a positive experiences. I may have to steal your idea of giving my students a copy of all of the poems we have written!

Your response to the book was so similiar to mine. I too lost loved ones due to a train. But I still enjoyed the book and think that it is a very powerful way to teach students that perhaps adults do know what they are talking about after all.
